The A/C compressor pumps refrigerant through the system. A failed one stops cooling and may send debris through the lines.

Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

Not a typical DIY; the work needs vacuum and refrigerant equipment.

Shopping for the part? Search car parts on eBay (affiliate link, disclosure). Make sure the part fits your car before buying.

Common questions

Why does a drier need replacing too?

The drier or accumulator soaks up moisture and debris. When the compressor fails, bits spread through the system, and a new part keeps the warranty valid.

Can I just replace the clutch?

Sometimes. If only the clutch has failed and the compressor still pumps, a clutch swap can cost less. Ask the shop to check for metal debris first.

How long does it take?

Most compressor jobs take 2.5 to 5 hours. Add time if the system needs a flush, which is common after a failed compressor.

How much does a/c compressor replacement cost?

A typical range across the US is $520 to $1,750. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
