The EGR valve sends some exhaust back into the engine to cut emissions. A clogged or stuck one causes rough idle, knock, hesitation and emissions codes.

Common questions

What are signs of a bad EGR valve?

Rough idle, pinging or knocking under load, poor mileage, and an EGR code. A stuck valve changes the mix and temperature inside the engine.

Can it be cleaned?

Sometimes. Carbon buildup is the usual cause, and a careful cleaning can bring the valve back. If the electric part has failed, it needs replacing.

Is it safe to drive?

Usually for a short time, but the engine may run rough and pollute more. Long term, it can lead to engine pinging and a failed emissions test.

How much does egr valve replacement cost?
