This is the range for the most common fix, oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor). Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.

The sensor in front of the catalytic converter has a small heater so it can start reading the exhaust quickly after a cold start. The computer sent power to that heater circuit and did not see the response it expected. Without the heater, the engine runs less cleanly for the first few minutes.

Safe to drive?
Usually yes, for now
Most common cause
Failed oxygen sensor heater

Safe to drive, but expect worse mileage and emissions until fixed.

What you may notice

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Failed oxygen sensor heater
  2. Blown heater fuse
  3. Damaged wiring near the exhaust
  4. Corroded plug
  5. Computer driver fault (rare)

Check this first

Find the fuse for the oxygen sensor heater in the fuse box and look at it. Then inspect the wire running along the exhaust for melted insulation or rubbing. A fuse or a damaged wire costs less than a new sensor.

P0030 questions

Why does the sensor have a heater?

The sensor only reads correctly when it is very hot. The heater gets it up to temperature in seconds, instead of minutes, so the computer can control the mixture right after a start.

Can I replace it myself?

Often, with an oxygen sensor socket, but an old sensor can be rusted tight in the pipe and refuse to come out. A shop may use heat and penetrating oil. Buy the correct part for your engine and bank.

Will it pass inspection?

Not while the light is on. Most inspection programs fail any car with an active check-engine light, and some will also not accept a car whose emissions tests have not completed since the repair.

How much does it cost to fix P0030?

The most common fix, oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor), has a typical range of $110 to $370 in Boston. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
