How this range is built

This is the range for the most common fix, radiator replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The computer commands cooling fan 1 to turn on at set temperatures and when the AC is on, and it checks the circuit for a response. It found an electrical problem, so the fan might not run when needed. That is a risk for overheating when the car sits in traffic.
- Safe to drive?
- Short trips only
- Most common cause
- Failed fan relay or fuse
If the temperature gauge stays normal, short trips are okay. If it climbs toward hot in traffic, stop and let it cool, because overheating can wreck the engine.

What you may notice
- Temperature rising in traffic or idling
- AC blowing warm at a stop
- Fan not spinning or always spinning
- Check-engine light
Common causes, most likely first
- Failed fan relay or fuse
- Bad fan motor
- Damaged wiring or connector at the fan
- Failed fan control module
Check this first
Check the cooling fan fuse and relay in the fuse box first. With the engine hot and AC on, see whether the fan turns.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P0480
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Thermostat replacement | $100 to $420 |
| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
| Coolant temperature sensor replacement | $90 to $240 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0480 questions
Can I drive with a dead cooling fan?
At highway speed, moving air often cools the engine well enough, but in traffic or at a stop, it can overheat quickly. Watch your temperature gauge and avoid long idles until the fan is fixed.
Is it the radiator?
Only on some cars where the fan is part of the radiator assembly. More often it is a relay, a fuse or the fan motor. A shop should test those first rather than quote a radiator.
Why is my AC warm at a stop?
The condenser in front of the radiator needs airflow at idle, and the fan supplies it. With the fan off, the AC loses cooling at a stop but may seem fine again once you drive.
How much does it cost to fix P0480?
The most common fix, radiator replacement, has a typical range of $300 to $1,025 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
