Listen for a ticking or puffing sound near the exhaust manifold or flex pipe when the engine is cold, and look for black soot at the joints. A leak ahead of the rear sensor can fool it into reading lean.

What is a post-catalyst trim code?
This code means the correction applied after the catalytic converter sensor ran out of room. The rear sensor says the mix is still off, even after the main fuel adjustments done with the front sensor.
Is the converter bad?
Sometimes, but shops check the sensor and exhaust leaks first because they are cheaper and more common. A converter is replaced only after the live readings confirm it is no longer cleaning the exhaust.
How is it different from P0171?
P0171 comes from the front sensor and its fuel trim limit. P2096 is set from the rear sensor and its slower adjustment. They can show up together when something affects the entire mixture.
