Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

A difficult first DIY; an uneven floor or poor layout shows up fast in tile, and grout and thinset are hard to redo.

Common questions

How long does tile take?

A small bathroom takes 2 to 4 days: demo, backer board, setting tile, and then grout after the thinset cures. Plan on no use of the floor for a day after grouting.

Why is prep so costly?

Tile cracks on a floor that flexes or is uneven. Leveling, new backer board and waterproofing take most of the labor and protect the finished job.

Can I tile over tile?

Sometimes, if the old tile is solid and flat. It raises the floor height, though, and any loose tile must come out first.
