Heating and cooling costs in Massachusetts
Furnaces, central A/C, heat pumps and mini-splits.
- Furnace replacement (gas)$5,300 to $12,100. Remove an old gas furnace and install a new one with the same fuel. Needed when the furnace is past 15-20 years, cracked, or repairs cost more than half of a new unit.
- Central AC installation$5,300 to $13,200. Install an outdoor condenser and indoor coil on an existing duct system. For homes with forced-air heat that have no central cooling.
- Heat pump installation (ducted)$9,200 to $21,500. Replace or pair with a furnace using an air-source heat pump that heats and cools through your ducts. Common with Mass Save rebates.
- Furnace repair$200 to $1,225. Fix a furnace that will not start, blows cold air, or cycles on and off. Common fixes are igniters, flame sensors, blower motors and control boards.
- AC repair or refrigerant recharge$210 to $1,500. Fix a central AC that is not cooling. Often a low charge from a leak, a failed capacitor, or a bad fan motor.
- Ductless mini-split installation (single zone)$2,900 to $7,000. Install one wall-mounted indoor unit and one outdoor unit to heat and cool a room or open area. Often used instead of ductwork.
