Charlestown is mainly residential, with many colonial and red-brick row houses on narrow streets plus the Bunker Hill public housing area. Row-house blocks often have little or no driveway, so plowing is mostly for the few homes and lots with a drive.
Parking during storms
Boston declares snow emergencies. During one you will be ticketed and towed if you park on a posted snow emergency artery. Park within 1 foot of the curb and at least 20 feet from intersections. Residents with a resident sticker get discounted or free garage and lot parking, starting 2 hours before the emergency; cars must leave within 2 hours after the ban is lifted. The page does not say who declares it. Charlestown streets restricted include Rutherford Avenue, Warren Street and Washington Street.
Sidewalks
Property owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within 3 hours after snow stops (within 3 hours after sunrise if it snowed overnight), with a path at least 42 inches wide. Fines for not clearing: $50 for residential buildings with 16 or fewer units, $100 for residential buildings with more than 16 units, $200 for commercial. Each day counts as a separate violation, and pushing snow into the street is also fined.
- Charlestown is a peninsula between the Charles and Mystic Rivers.
- Two small hills, Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill, fill the interior with residential buildings.
- The City of Boston, not a separate town, plows and sets the snow rules here.
