Ignition, fuel and air: repair costs
Coils, injectors, fuel pumps and the sensors that set the fuel mix. Typical ranges for the Boston area.
- Ignition coil replacement (one coil)$80 to $350. An ignition coil sends the spark to a cylinder. A bad one causes a misfire, flashing check engine light, rough idle and poor power.
- Fuel injector replacement (one injector)$180 to $910. A clogged or leaking fuel injector is replaced. Symptoms include rough idle, misfire codes, poor mileage and a fuel smell.
- Fuel pump replacement$400 to $1,150. The fuel pump sends gas from the tank to the engine. A weak one causes sputtering, stalling, hard starts, or a car that won't start.
- Mass airflow sensor replacement$130 to $410. The mass airflow (MAF) sensor measures air entering the engine. A bad one causes rough idle, stalling, poor mileage, and hesitation.
- Throttle body cleaning$85 to $210. Carbon buildup is cleaned from the throttle body so air flows smoothly. It may help with rough idle, stalling and slow response.
- Throttle body replacement$300 to $940. A failing electronic throttle body is replaced. It can cause reduced power mode, stalling, rough idle and a throttle warning light.
- Vacuum leak repair$100 to $530. A cracked hose, loose fitting or bad gasket that lets extra air into the engine is found and fixed. Symptoms include high idle, lean codes and whistling.
- PCV valve replacement$70 to $240. The positive crankcase ventilation valve lets engine gases flow back into the intake. A stuck one can cause oil leaks, rough idle and lean codes.
- Crankshaft position sensor replacement$120 to $400. This sensor tells the computer how fast the crankshaft is spinning. A bad one can cause no-start, stalling, or a check engine light.
- Camshaft position sensor replacement$110 to $370. This sensor tracks the camshaft so the computer times the fuel and spark. A bad one can cause hard starts, rough running and codes.
- Coolant temperature sensor replacement$100 to $260. This sensor tells the computer how hot the engine is. A bad one can cause hard starts, poor mileage, and wrong temperature gauge readings.
- VVT solenoid / cam phaser repair$190 to $1,325. The variable valve timing solenoid or cam phaser adjusts valve timing. Faults cause rough idle, rattles, power loss, and timing codes.
- Turbo boost leak repair$150 to $720. A cracked hose, loose clamp or leaking intercooler pipe in a turbocharged engine is repaired. Symptoms include low power, whistling and boost codes.
