Transmission: repair costs
Fluid service, solenoids, clutches and rebuilds. Typical ranges for the Boston area.
- Transmission solenoid replacement$320 to $1,325. Shift solenoids control fluid flow inside an automatic transmission. A bad one causes harsh shifts, stuck gears, limp mode or shift codes.
- Transmission rebuild or replacement$3,100 to $6,800. A failed automatic or manual transmission is rebuilt or swapped for a remanufactured unit. Signs include slipping, grinding, no movement or heavy fluid leaks.
- Torque converter replacement$970 to $2,725. The torque converter links the engine to the automatic transmission. A bad one causes shudder, slipping, overheating or whining.
- Transmission speed / range sensor replacement$120 to $490. A transmission sensor tells the computer about gear and speed. A bad one can cause erratic shifts, no start in park, or limp mode.
- Clutch replacement (manual transmission)$1,100 to $2,250. A worn clutch is replaced in a manual-transmission car. Signs include slipping, a high engagement point, or trouble shifting.
