This is the range for the most common fix, evap purge valve replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The purge valve should be closed unless the engine is running and the computer opens it. This code says fumes were still flowing into the engine when the valve was supposed to be shut. The usual reason is a valve that sticks open or has dirt on its seat.
- Safe to drive?
- Usually yes, for now
- Most common cause
- Purge solenoid stuck partly open
Safe to drive, but you may see hard starts right after fueling.

What you may notice
- Check-engine light on
- Hard starting after fueling
- Rough idle after a fill-up
Common causes, most likely first
- Purge solenoid stuck partly open
- Debris in the valve seat
- Damaged vapor line
- Overfilling the tank soaked the canister
- Wiring that keeps the valve powered
Check this first
Avoid topping off the tank after the pump clicks, since that can soak the canister and cause this. If the car is hard to start after fueling, say so.

Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0496 questions
Why does topping off the tank matter?
Liquid fuel pushed past the nozzle can run into the vapor canister and soak the charcoal inside, which ruins it. Stop filling when the pump clicks off the first time, and the canister stays dry.
Is this the same as a vacuum leak?
It acts like one, because extra air and fuel vapor enter the intake without being measured. The difference is the path: here the leak goes through the purge valve rather than through a cracked hose or gasket.
Do I need to replace the canister?
Only if it is soaked with fuel or cracked. The valve is far more often the real problem and costs much less, so a good shop will test the valve first and check the canister after.
