How this range is built
| Part of the job | Low | High |
|---|---|---|

This is the range for the most common fix, diagnostic scan (check engine light). Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The engine computer sends a steady 5 volt supply to many of its sensors, such as the throttle, pedal and pressure sensors. This code means that supply is outside its normal range. A shorted sensor can drag the supply down, so several readings may go wrong at the same time.
- Safe to drive?
- No, get it looked at first
- Most common cause
- A shorted sensor dragging the supply down
Several sensors may report bad data, causing stalling or limp mode. Avoid driving.

What you may notice
- Rough running
- Stalling
- Several warning lights
- Check-engine light
Common causes, most likely first
- A shorted sensor dragging the supply down
- Damaged wiring
- Failing engine computer
- Bad ground
Check this first
Ask which sensors share this 5 volt supply on your engine and have the shop unplug them one at a time while watching the voltage. The sensor whose removal brings the voltage back is the one that has failed.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P0641
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| CAN bus wiring repair | $170 to $1,125 |
| ECU / engine control module replacement | $410 to $2,250 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0641 questions
Which sensor is bad?
The shop isolates it by unplugging one sensor at a time. When the supply voltage returns to normal, they know which sensor was dragging it down, or whether the wiring is the cause.
Is the computer bad?
The computer is the last suspect. A shorted sensor or damaged wire is far more common, and replacing the computer would not fix a short somewhere else in the wiring.
Why many codes?
Many sensors share the same supply, so when it drops out, all of them lose their reference at once. That can set several unrelated codes and lights at the same time.

The most common fix, diagnostic scan (check engine light), has a typical range of $55 to $250 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
